In other cases, Chase chooses actors whose success is specifically based on Mafia movies. Most of these actors played and play in both cinema and television. In other words, watching Goodfellas from on, when The Sopranos begins, is a different experience. It would not be surprising, if the viewer had learned this approach from Dr.
Therefore, the first part of the repurposing process lies in the double casting choices. What happens, though, when TV series belonging to different genres repurpose The Sopranos or the formula of its success? In the second half of part three 3. Tony is visually revealed through a series of extreme close-ups of his right hand on the wheel, as he drives back to New Jersey from New York, the cigar he is smoking, the unglamorous right-pinky ring, and his eyes in the rear-view mirror before the smoke of his cigar obscures them.
At the end of this episode, where Homer Simpson, become the savior of Springfield from crime, has to protect himself from the Mafia boss, Fat Tony and his crew, who want him dead. In the part of the episode under examination, Fat Tony and his clan get on a minivan.
Tony is portrayed as being beyond everything and everyone. Tony is the split character, whose omnipotence knows no confines. He is their savior. Yet, arguing that Tony is the boss of two families is a fundamental oversight. There is only one family, the Sopranos. Then, the integration of non-blood related characters in the Soprano family blurs the border between the two groups and the Sopranos become an extended family, as the title of the TV series seems to suggest.

I started to feel it. Rare M. Aug 15, The equal amount of screen time devoted to Tony Soprano's business, family and personal life with therapy makes this show feel very real as it constantly displays his struggles. Whilst all the characters are played well by their respective actors and actresses, it isn't until later seasons where you start to connect with them. But with these characters comes some amusing dialogue as all of the characters have natural chemistry.
Thomas T. Jul 23, Such an amazing show. Always fun to rewatch every couple of years. Such a tragic loss. Konrad D. Jul 20, The Sopranos made a brilliant debut. They perfectly balanced the professional and personal life of the mobster Anthony Soprano. Overall: A fantastic start for a mind-blowing series. Dhanush R. Jul 03, Not my favourite season but introduces the characters and the story nicely.
Jonathan R. Mar 28, James Gandolfini is really good as the lead, but same as with Mad Men everyone in the Ensemble is really good. The Screenplays are brilliantly written by, mostly, David Chase himself.
The Direction and Cinematography are great as is the Soundtrack. And how they involved this sorta dark humour was great as well, there really are some laughs in it. Nick M. See all Audience reviews. An innovative look at the life of fictional Mafia Capo Tony Soprano, this serial is presented largely first person, but additional perspective is conveyed by the intimate conversations Tony has with his psychotherapist.
We see Tony at work, at home, and in therapy. Moments of black comedy intersperse this aggressive, adult drama, with adult language, and extreme violence.
Made in America. Did you know Edit. By , The Sopranos premiered on HBO and was well on its way to becoming a prime example of "must-see" television. The Sopranos lasted for six seasons, the last of which was split into two parts in and , and the decision to end the series ultimately lied with Chase.
When The Sopranos aired its controversial finale in June , the series hadn't experienced any major drop in viewership, so it wasn't HBO who was calling for its cancellation. Rather, The Sopranos ended because Chase drafted the best finale for the story, which he told a crowd gathered for his Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television acceptance in that he came up with during an extended hiatus between seasons 5 and 6.
This isn't to say there wasn't some HBO interference, particularly early on.
